Virat-Anushka pledge support to COVID-19 relief funds

NEW DELHI: Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Keeping social media repercussions front and centre, and staying clear of which cricketer donated how much for the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak, India skipper Virat Kohli and his actor wife Anushka Sharma on Monday pledged their support to the Prime Minster and the Maharashtra Chief Minister's relief funds but did not specify how or how much he will be contributing.

Kohli, who has been constantly urging people to practice social distancing via video messages, took to Twitter to announce the decision.

"Anushka and I are pledging our support towards PM-CARES Fund & the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (Maharashtra). Our hearts are breaking looking at the suffering of so many & we hope our contribution, in some way, helps easing the pain of our fellow citizens #IndiaFightsCorona"

Though the couple did not disclose the amount, a source in the Hindi film industry close to the duo told IANS that Virat and Anushka have jointly donated Rs 30 million towards the relief fund.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declared on Saturday that it would donate Rs 510 million to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund to help fight the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Last week, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar had donated Rs 5 million while former cricketer Suresh Raina contributed Rs 5.2 million.
