Local ground to be spruced up for Gokulam FC

KOCHI: The Manjeri football ground in the football crazy district of Malappuram in Kerala will soon be getting a facelift.

I-League aspirant team Gokulam FC, semi-finalists in the Kerala Premier League, had earlier secured the Kottappady ground in Ernakulam district on a year-long contract, but has shown its preference for the Manjeri ground.

There were also reports that the club could shift their home base to the neighbouring Kozhikode district, all leading to denial of use of the Kottappady and Kozhikode grounds to the club.

Gokulam FC then approached the state sports ministry for a solution to the problem, and have now been assured that the Manjeri ground would be readied for use within a month, according to a report in Goal.com.

Poor maintenance had resulted in the football ground, home ground for Gokulam FC, falling out of favour.

The Malappuram based club has had its share of woes with respect to a ground since its launch earlier this year. If its bid to play in the I-League is accepted, FC Gokulam, promoted by film producer and distributor Gokulam Gopalan, will be the first team from Kerala to play in the I-League since the relegation of Chirag United Kerala after the 2011-12 season.
