LONDON: With Sri Lanka under a state of emergency following months of widespread anti-government protests, questions are being raised over the fate of the upcoming Asia Cup, which the island nation is to host.

Even as reports suggest that Bangladesh has been kept on standby, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told ANI, “I can’t comment at the moment. We will keep monitoring. Australia is playing there at the moment. The Sri Lankan team is actually doing very well. So, let’s wait for a month”.

MUMBAI: Fears are growing that the upcoming Asia Cup, the Asian Cricket Council’s flagship event, will be moved out of Sri Lanka. While it was India’s turn to host the event, upon a request made by Sri Lanka Cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India had agreed for the event to be staged in the Emerald Isles.

COLOMBO: The 2021 Asia Cup, which was shifted from Pakistan to Sri Lanka, was on Wednesday called off due to rising COVID-19 cases in the island nation. The Asia Cup, which was last held in 2018, was scheduled to be held in June but Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva announced that it will be difficult for them to conduct the tournament.

DUBAI: Former Sri Lanka player and coach Nuwan Zoysa has been banned from all cricket for six years after an ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code (read match fixing). The ban is backdated to 31 October 2018, when Zoysa was provisionally suspended as an immediate action.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua: Cricket West Indies (CWI) Tuesday confirmed the all-format International tour between West Indies and Sri Lanka starting in March, signalling the return of international cricket to the Caribbean. The two teams will play three T20Is, three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Test matches in a bio-secure environment in Antigua from Wednesday, March 3 to Friday, April 2.

SRI LANKA WILL HOST of Asia Cup cricket championship in June next year, Pakistan Cricket Board Chief Executive Wasim Khan has stated. Pakistan was sceduled to host the Asia Cup this year but the coronavirus pandemic resulted in its postponement. With Sri Lanka now given the rights to host the Asia Cup in 2021, Pakistan will host the event in 2022, Khan told PTI.

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced that the Indian cricket team will not travel to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe owing to the current threat of COVID-19.  Team India was originally scheduled to travel to the Emerald Isles from 24th June for three ODIs and as many T20Is and to Zimbabwe for a series comprising three ODIs starting 22nd August.
