TOKYO: Shooter Avani Lekhara scripted history on Monday as she became the first Indian woman to win a Gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, firing her way to the top of the podium in the R-2 women's 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event here.  

The 19-year-old finished with a world record equalling total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record.

She's the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics Gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016).

NEW DELHI: India’s proposal to host the additional shooting and archery events for the 2022 Commonwealth Games has been endorsed by the British House of Lords after an extensive debate, PTI reports. Last month, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had submitted a formal proposal to host a shooting championship, where the medals won would be counted in the tally of the Games.

LONDON: The Commonwealth Games Federation on Monday poured cold water on speculation doing the rounds that a Commonwealth Championship of shooting will be held in India during the 2022 Birmingham Games.   Talk of a CWG shooting championship had surfaced as a compromise solution to make up for the sport's axing from the multi-sport showpiece.

NEW DELHI: Indian Olympic Association president Narinder Batra on Thursday said that the IOA's threat to withdraw from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in protest against the exclusion of shooting still stands... though there are enough indications that the extreme step remains an outside possibility.

NEW DELHI: Shooting WILL NOT be added to the roster of the 2022 Birmingham Games despite Indian Olympic Association's boycott threat, a Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) official told PTI Thursday, ahead of a crucial meeting between the two sports bodies. CGF chief Louise Martin and CEO David Gevemberg will meet IOA chief Narinder Batra and secretary general Rajeev Mehta on Friday.

BIRMINGHAM: Shooting has been left out of the 2022 Commonwealth Games programme. dealing a big blow to India which won as many as 16 medals, including seven Gold, at the 2018 edition in Gold Coast. The executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) met Thursday and approved the inclusion of women's cricket, beach volleyball and para table tennis into the Games programme for the Birmingham edition.

MUMBAI: After the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games organisers reduced the quota for shooters and 2022 Games host city Birmingham indicating that the sport will likely not be included, the latest blow to the discipline is the decision by the Jakarta Asian Games organisers to trim shooting events from their schedule.

MUMBAI: Shooting as a discipline will not be reinstated at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive officer David Grevemberg has confirmed.  Grevemberg issued the clarification in response to queries raised by the editor of Shooting Times.
