India looking to host Sudirman Cup, Junior Worlds; writes to BWF

NEW DELHI: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has written to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), expressing its interest to host the Sudirman Cup finals this year.

India was scheduled to host the mixed team championship in 2023, but the BWF awarded the rights to Suzhou, China, while giving the 2026 World Championships to India.

Suzhou was due to host the championships in 2021 but, due to the COVID-19 situation in China, the BWF was not able to stage any tournaments in the country and the event was shifted to Vantaa in Finland.

Yonex, Badminton Association of India sign Rs 750 million sponsorship deal 
NEW DELHI: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has signed a contract worth Rs. 75 crore with sports equipment maker Yonex Sunrise, the PTI reports. As part of the deal, Yonex will supply equipments for all BAI-accredited tournaments, camps and academies in India in exchange of holding title sponsorship rights for all BAI tournaments for the next 3 years.

Sarma elected BAI president for 4-yr term
PANAJI: Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected president of Badminton Association of India during its annual general body meeting here. Sarma, a cabinet minister of the ruling BJP in Assam, was elected unopposed for a term four-year term. He took over as the interim president of the BAI last year after the demise of Akhilesh Das Gupta.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has sought the Centre’s response on a PIL seeking removal of Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the post of president of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), which draws attention to the fact that his appointment was in violation of the apex court order that a minister or a public servant cannot become an office bearer in a sports body.

Guwahati to host first regional badminton tourney
MUMBAI: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) will host the first ever South Asian Regional Badminton Tournament from November 28 in Guwahati. The 11-day long event will be played at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium will see participation from six countries - India, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives.
