Rooney confirms move to DC United

LIVERPOOL: England striker Wayne Rooney has been officially released by his Premier League club Everton and will be heading Washington D.C to play for the Major League Soccer (MLS) club, DC United.

This development effectively ends Rooney’s time with the Premier League, being a part of the competition for 16 years. He had first made a name for himself in his debut season in 2002-03, becoming Everton’s youngest goalscorer at the age of 16. The following season saw him replicating this feat in England colours as well, scoring against Macedonia in a friendly.

However, it was at Manchester United where the 32-year-old played a critical role in the club’s dominance from the mid-2000s till the
early 2010s, as the Red Devils won 5 Premier League titles. In his 13 years with the club, his tally of 253 goals in 559 matches has been unmatched till date.

With 208 Premier League goals on aggregate, he is the tournament’s second highest goal scorer of all time behind Alan Shearer.

It is expected that Rooney will complete all the formalities of the move to D.C United when the MLS’ transfer window opens on July 10.
