NEW DELHI: Sports icon PT Usha is among four illustrious names from India's non-political arena nominated to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Also nominated alongside the "Payyoli Express" were music maestro Ilaiyaraaja, acclaimed screenwriter V Vijayendra Prasad and philanthropist and spiritual leader Veerendra Heggade.

The common thread linking all the nominees is that they hail from South India. While Ilaiyaraaja hails from Tamil Nadu and Usha from Kerala, Prasad is from Telangana and Heggade from Karnataka.

NEW DELHI: Retired Team India cricketer Harbhajan Singh is among five nominees selected by the Aam Aadmi Party for Rajya Sabha or the Upper House of Parliament from Punjab, where the party won a gigantic victory in recent assembly elections. Elections for five Rajya Sabha seats that are falling vacant from Punjab on April 9 are set for March 31.

The Bill, which was passed by a voice vote in the Upper House, was adopted by the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) on August 3.
