NEW DELHI: Double Olympic medallist badminton ace PV Sindhu and Indian men's hockey team captain Manpreet Singh were on Wednesday named the country's flagbearer for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games to be held Thursday in Birmingham.

While Sindhu's name was announced from a shortlist of three athletes, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) added Manpreet as the second flagbearer after being informed by the organisers that two flagbearers – one male and one female – was a must for each nation.

NEW DELHI: Celebrated boxer MC Mary Kom is to be conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian award, while world champion shuttler PV Sindhu will get the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest honour.  The duo are among eight awardees in the sports category announced by the government for the prestigious honours on Saturday, on the eve of the country's 71st Republic Day.

NEW DELHI: The players auction for the fifth season of the Premier Badminton League here Tuesday saw world champion PV Sindhu and world number 1 women's singles player Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei fetching the highest prices of Rs 7.7 million each. Incidentally, while each franchise had a purse of Rs 20 million, Rs 7.7 million was the maximum a team could bid for a player.

MUMBAI: PepsiCo India’s sports drink brand Gatorade has released a digital film to commemorate the latest sporting milestone achieved by its brand ambassador PV Sindhu.  The ace shuttler created history last week in Basel, Switzerland, by becoming the first Indian to win the BWF championship. Gatorade has been enabling Sindhu’s performance since she came on board as brand ambassador in 2017.

With total earnings of $5.5 million, Sindhu is tied for the 13th place in The Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2019 list released by Forbes on Tuesday.
