MUMBAI: The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has signed on former competitive powerlifter Kavita Devi, making her the first Indian woman wrestler to play for the WWE.

Current WWE champion Jinder Mahal, who is in India currently to promote the WWE Live's two upcoming shows in Delhi this December, confirmed the news.

Haryana native Kavita Devi trained with The Great Khali (Dalip Singh Rana) at his Punjab based wrestling promotion and training academy. A Gold medalist at the 2016 South Asian Games, Kavita shot to fame after her video, in which she wrestled against a woman wrestler named B B Bull Bull, went viral on social media. She was a featured participant in the Mae Young Classic women’s tournament and is expected to begin training from January 2018 at Florida's WWE Performance Center, home of the developmental system for WWE with seven training rings, a world-class strength and conditioning program and cutting-edge edit and production facilities.

The WWE also announced that Shadia Bseiso from Jordan has become the first Arab woman from the Middle East to sign a WWE developmental contract.
