K D Jadhav Memorial Kushti Championship to be held in Dec

MUMBAI: The Sangram Singh Foundation will hold the KD Jadhav Memorial International Kushti Championship here this December.

Singh, a World Pro Wrestling and two-time Commonwealth heavyweight champion, will return to the mat after a year-long gap as part of his plan to change the face of wrestling in the country, according to a statement.

The championship, held in memory of India's first individual Olympic medallist, will take place here in December. The championship will adhere to professional boxing norms, with six rounds of three minutes each. Female wrestlers will also be seen in action at the event. The event  will be broadcast live on DD Sports, as well as in 25 other countries.

"We are aiming to not only improve the profile of the sport but also unearth more and more talents from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities,” Singh said.

Among those present on the occasion were 2010 Commonwealth Gold medallist Narsingh Yadav, Jadhav’s son Ranjit Jadhav and veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal.
