The 17th edition of the TATA Indian Premier League opened to blockbuster viewership numbers, with 16.8 crore (168 million) unique viewers tuning in to watch the season’s first game between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22, Disney Star, the tournament’s official broadcaster stated on Thursday.

The broadcaster further asserted that a composite watch-time of 12.76 billion minutes represents the highest ever for the opening day of any IPL season. Watch-time minutes are a compilation of the time spent by each viewer in watching the game.

MUMBAI: JioCinema, the official streaming platform for the TATA IPL, made an incredible opening for the 2024 season as over 11.3 crore (113 million) viewers logged in on Day 1, a 51% increase compared to Day 1 of IPL 2023.  As JioCinema commenced their second season on digital, over 590m video views were registered on the platform for the opening day of IPL 2024 which led to 6.6 billion minutes of watch-time.

Cricket, football & kabaddi are the top 3 sports, with audience base of 612, 305 & 208 million respectively. MUMBAI: The sports business in India stood at Rs 15,766 crore ($1.9 billion approx) in 2023. Tellingly, cricket’s (read Indian Premier League in particular) share of this is 87 per cent, up from 85 per cent in 2022. All other other sports, including football, kabaddi, hockey, badminton, to name some prominent ones, account for the remaining 13 per cent.
