MUMBAI: The McDowell Signature Indian Derby 2010 Sunday witnessed history at the Mahalaxmi Race Course here after bookies' and a record 20,000 crowd favourite Jacqueline took the winners accolades in a come from behind victory.
The wonder filly, owned by Mr & Mrs Vijay B Shirke, K N Dhunjibhoy and Berjis Desai and trained by Pesi Shroff, powered forward with a last minute burst that took it through the finish line. Jacqueline’s owners took home a prize purse of a whopping Rs 12.7 million.
Jacqueline broke several records on the way but the most significant one - winning all the four Indian classics - is bound to stay untouched at least for the foreseeable future. This is a feat that has never been accomplished before in Indian racing history.
In another landmark of sorts, the club’s betting turnover also crossed the Rs 40 million barrier.
Some of the best Indian and international jockeys participated in this, the country's richest individual sporting event. McDowell Signature Indian Derby has evolved into a unique coming together of connoisseurs of the good life, who have the penchant for racing and appreciation of premium brands.
The new Mercedes C class sedan was won by Shahrukh Goveshi in the sweepstake.
