MUMBAI: The cream of Indian boxing, barring three big names, will face off here this week at the fourth Super Cup Inter-Zonal National Boxing Championships.

The prime attraction at the event would be the 22-year-old Manipuri pugilist Suranjoy Singh, who was declared the best boxer in the President's Cup Inter-Continental event held at Baku, Azerbaijan in December last year.

The January 13-17 event, promoted by the Maharashtra Boxing Association, would see the Indian squad members for the forthcoming Dhaka SAF Games taking part in the competition. The qualification rounds will be held at the suburban Andheri Sports Complex while the semi finals and finals would be at the the Shivaji Park Gymkhana in central Mumbai.

Expectedly, the largest contingent of 22 boxers is coming from North India. The Indian boxing team for the Commonwealth Boxing Championship to be held at New Delhi in March, 2010, will also be selected during the championship.

Three names that will be sorely missed by Indian fans are stars Vijender Singh, Jitender Singh and Akhil Kumar. However, the fans will have some consolation in that Vijender is expected to make an appearance at the event even though he will not be competing.
